Hey! I think everything seems hard at the time you are doing it. But you have to remember you are there to learn and it isn’t going to be too easy. As long as you are doing a subject that you enjoy then I don’t think it matters as you will want to keep finding out more about it 🙂

      Hey Chocolatethundra (great name),
It was tough at times but interesting so enjoyable. Most of the time it was very managable. There were always people to help and talk to if you had problems or didn’t understand something.

Academics often work very long hours but they have the privilege of spending a significant proportion of that time investigating areas that fascinate them. This is a privilege. I worked in the private and public sector as market research exec and community researcher before working for a university. I did not find the work at university harder but it does take a lot of hours for many of us, especially those of us that undertake extra-mural activites as well as the day job.

I think working in a university can be as hard or as easy as you make it – it really depends on you as a person, on your motivation, and on your desire to succeed (and also on a bit of luck!). I have found that who you work with is really important too, it’s always good to be around other motivated people who are willing to help you out if you face any problems or find yourself stuck on something. It’s really important to have a good mentor to guide you especially at the beginning when you are starting out. Of course, it’s challenging at times and frustrating too. But if you stay focused anything is possible!
