In the UK most lecturers get about 20,000 to 40,000 pounds per year and senior lecturers about 40 to 50,000 pounds per year. Most professors get about 50 to 80, 000 pounds a year. A few, like professors at the best business schools like London Business School are paid much more (six figures). In Ireland academics are paid better than in the UK. Academics in the UK are required to put at least 6% of their salary towards their pension. On top of the basic salary most academics get some extra money,, perhaps £1,000 to enable them to attend one or two conferences a year at which they present their research results and some travel money to enable them to attend and give seminars on their work at other insitutions. Many conferences are international and bring together all the scientists working on a similar area from around the world.
