Wow! Do you mean UCB as in the biopharma company? If so that’s amazing! You must have really enjoyed it! I’m an academic scientist because I work within a university, but I would consider working for industry in the future.
I work for the Japanese government in a new institute that is going to apply to be a university next year. I suppose I work in the academic sector but at the moment we are funded by government money.
I’m an academic scientist. There are advantages and disadvantages for both occupations. Academic scientists have a bit more flexibility with what they choose to research, often have to teach students and get paid a bit less than industrial scientists. Industrial scientists often start on one project, and then get moved around depending on the success of the project (and how much money the company is making from it!)
Academic scientist but I’ve worked with industrial scientists, eg helping chemical engineers use creative approaches to find new and different processes to build a plant at half the cost so they could compete with Taiwan and keep their jobs. They did.
